A Major Breakthrough for Medical Imaging Intelligence by Hinacom

miPlatform® "Cardiovascular Imaging Intelligent Analysis and Precise Interventional Treatment Planning System" makes its debut on Beijing Capital Medical Imaging Summit (BCMIS)


In recent years, the dominance of Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs) as major contributors to total global mortality has emerged and has been previously described in detail elsewhere.[1] According to the statistics from WHO, CVDs will continue to dominate mortality trends in the future.[2] Among them, Aortic dissection (AD) and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) are the most malignant diseases which threaten human life.

What are AD and AAA? AD is a serious condition in which there is a tear in the wall of the major artery carrying blood out of the heart (aorta). As the tear extends along the wall of the aorta, blood can flow in between the layers of the blood vessel wall (dissection). This can lead to aortic rupture or decreased blood flow (ischemia) to organs. AD may also cause abnormal widening or ballooning of the aorta (aneurysm).[3]

AD and AAA are life-threatening diseases and need to be treated right away. Of all people with aortic dissection, 40% die immediately and do not reach a hospital in time. Of the remainder, 1% die every hour, making prompt diagnosis and treatment a priority. Even after diagnosis, 5–20% die during surgery or in the immediate postoperative period.[4]

Lianjun Huang, the Director of Interventional and Diagnostic Radiology Department in ANZHEN Hospital, Capital Medical University, has been dedicated on studying cardiovascular imaging diagnosis and interventional treatment for nearly 30 years. Many China's first interventional surgeries have been successfully performed by Dr. Huang and his team. Up to now, more than ten thousand cases of cardiovascular interventional surgeries have been accomplished successfully. Especially for the treatment of AD and AAA, over two thousand cases of Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair and Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (TEVAR+EVAR) have been performed.

However, the preoperative evaluation of such operation is not that easy. Key images from CT/CTA study only provide limited quantified information, Dr. Huang has to measure the 3D images on post-processing workstation screen with a ruler, then manually derivate and calculate key parameters to make a treatment plan. Unprecise measurement and time-consuming surgery preparation have become major shortcomings of the previous manual preoperative analysis.

On 22nd-23rd July 2017, Tony, CEO of Hinacom, and Dr. Huang jointly released miPlatform® "Cardiovascular Imaging Intelligent Analysis and Precise Interventional Treatment Planning System" on Beijing Capital Medical Imaging Summit (BCMIS). Based on Hinacom's artificial intelligence algorithm, the system can automatically provide full vascular quantitative model with measurement report within 5 minutes. Not only the pre-prepared period can be significant reduced, more precise and accurate interventional treatment plan can be provided to patient. After 3 years' research and development, miPlatform® "Cardiovascular Imaging Intelligent Analysis and Precise Interventional Treatment Planning System" is equipped with advanced 3D imaging segmentation algorithms, the whole aorta can be automatically extracted. Full-fidelity 2D images, volume rendering and Curved Planar Reconstruction (CPR) images can be easily viewed and operated by doctors. Based on auto-quantitative analysis model, detailed parameters with report can be generated by few buttons of clicks. Compared to 3D post processing workstation from international mainstream brands, Hinacom's volume rendering and analyzing results are faster, more accurate and precise.

Although, we have skilled interventional technique and advanced research results in China, how to control CVDs and reduce mortality based on such huge population are still a severe challenge. Compared to developed country, people in China who suffer from CVDs have less access to effective and equitable health care services which respond to their needs. Few medical care centers can perform Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) surgeries over 200 or 300 per year, but most of them only perform 100 surgeries or fewer, that is not even close to the total number of patient who suffered from CVDs.[5] As a result, saving experts' time, and improving their working efficiency are crucial.
